How to Raise a Reader

We parents are our child’s first teachers. Talking to and reading with our child in a loving and uplifting way helps to form a bond and raise a healthy child. Reading is the foundation of learning and success in life.

The goal is to first give children the love and appreciation of reading and books. Then, when our children learn to read, our job gets easier as they become independent readers.

On the other hand, if a child doesn’t get a good start in reading at an early age, they will struggle to read throughout their school years, making it very challenging for the child, parents and teachers. Our children deserve to have a literacy rich environment and to become the best version of themselves. Here are 5 tips for promoting reading in the home.

Floyd Stokes

Floyd Stokes is the founder and executive director of the American Literacy Corporation (ALC), a non-profit promoting reading to children that he founded in 2000. He is the author of over 30 children’s books including My Glasses and The Story of Nelson Mandela.

Mr. Stokes is the recipient of several awards to include an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Central Penn College, the James Patterson PageTurner Award, and John F. Kennedy High School in Mound Bayou, MS renaming the library The Floyd “SuperReader” Stokes Library. He has read to students in all 50 states.

He served 6 years in the U.S. Army (Airborne). He was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta. He lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Learn more about his work at www.superreader.org.
